A
premier exponent of the Portuguese styled ethnic blues,
or rather pegged as Fado
By the Portuguese and ethnomusicologist alike, Mariza
represents the coming of age of this subtle yet sophisticated
form of music. Fado which remained traditionally folk
for many years has evolved to an evocative genre which
serves as a multi lateral platform for singers world
over to exercise a wide range of emotional dexterity
in their singing, slightly on the sly of the art –
Mariza draws an exclusive tapestry which is unparagoned
by any other. Her moving voice amplifies not only her
talent in delivering songs without any artistic compromise
but simultaneously reminds one of the deep emotive texture
that she maintains throughout her repertoire.
The release last year of her debut album Fado em mim
attracted universal praise and drew the world's attention
to a wider roots renaissance taking place in Portugal
and won admiration from critics and musicians for her
unprecedented slant in delivering this art form with
much originality.
Born in Mozambique, but raised in the suburbs of Mouria
in Lisbon,Portugal, Mariza’s music Interest is
as diverse and unique as her own being which is seen
as a crucial facet in which she delivers her fado. Mariza
has recently won the best newcomer award from the prestigious
world music panel at BBC Radio 3, And yet nominated
for another in it’s upcoming awards for the year
2004.Fado em mim was followed by Fado Curvo, a collection
compositions by herself and many other renowned composers
from the Fado tradition. An unparalleled and unprecedented
voice is always welcomed to the music world.
A journey discovered by veteran musician / producer
Jorge Fernando has lead not only to the discovery of
a great vocalist but a diva who’s voice is as
delicate as the art of Fado itself.
