John
Dohraiy : Merging the Musical styles of British Guyana
and Jazz
Rising from Brooklyn, New York
- John Dohraiy's views towards jazz is a rather radical
one, A piano player from the traditions of Monk and
Tatum, Mr.Dohraiy's has been heavily involved in fusing
tropical msuic with Jazz. In Lighter vein Mr.Dohraiy
summarizes his
reaction to his own music "Once you declare your
ethnicity ; you will also have to make a musical point
that Guyana is far beyond "Chutney music",
being a hybrid developed by its self and left to complicate
- I qualify way to much for the fusion world, therefore
its
becoming extremely hard calling myself a jazz musician,
or my music jazz - I'd rather call it music",
Mr.Dohraiy works extensively composing pieces for
experimental theatre and small plays ,as well as performing
with his trio "Lela" around the New York
area.
